Ring ladder

At what distance does your chipping start to fall apart?

In the app: Ring-hit by distance

What it measures

  • The inside-the-ring rate, one bar per distance band: 2, 3–6, 7–10, 11–14, 15–18, 19–24 and 25+ yd.
  • A band needs 10 chips before it can be compared, and two bands need to differ by at least 10 points before one is called weaker.

How it helps you

It tells you which distance to practise next, so you do not spend the session on the one you already like.

It shows how far your touch reaches, which also helps you choose your chip or pitch on the course.

Examples, and what the coach says

Example 1

A cliff in the middle

115 chips across four distance bands.

Inside the ring, by distance
3–6 yd
70 % 28 of 40
7–10 yd
50 % 20 of 40
11–14 yd
23 % 7 of 30
15–18 yd
5 of 10 chips recorded, not enough to show yet

How to read it

  • Rates fall with distance, as they should. What matters is how fast.
  • The drop from 50 % to 23 % between neighbouring bands is the cliff.
  • 15–18 yd has only 5 chips. Ignore it, and do not read it as a strength.
AI coachFocus: Chips from 11–14 yd

You find the ring 70 % of the time from 3–6 yd but 23 % from 11–14 yd. It falls off suddenly, not gradually, which usually means your technique for a longer chip is not settled yet.

Next session: Spend your next session mostly at 11–14 yd. Buckets lets you stay on one target long enough to find a repeatable length of swing.

Example 2

Even across the board

120 chips, 40 at each of three bands.

Inside the ring, by distance
3–6 yd
60 % 24 of 40
7–10 yd
55 % 22 of 40
11–14 yd
53 % 21 of 40

How to read it

  • The spread from best to worst is 7 points, which is below the 10 needed to call any band weaker.
  • A flat ladder is good news. Your touch carries across this range.
  • It also means you do not yet know where your limit is.
AI coachFocus: Find your edge further back

You find the ring between 53 % and 60 % at every distance you have recorded. Nothing stands out as a weakness, so drilling these distances again would mostly confirm what you already know.

Next session: Move a rung further back and record 15–18 yd. The Chipping 5 m Ladder climbs the distance for you.

All numbers here are illustrative sample data, and the coach notes show the kind of advice you get. In the app, the AI coach reads all your chipping data and gives you one focus with its reasoning, based on your own sessions. Each chart also has a one-line takeaway of its own.
