Distance table

At each distance, is it the strike, the landing or the finish that lets you down?

In the app: Success by distance

What it measures

  • One row per 5 yd step, with the number of attempts and three percentages: landed on target, finished on target, and struck cleanly.
  • Each column keeps its own count. A ball with no recorded finish is unknown for finish, not a miss. A column shows a dash until it has 10 balls of its own.

How it helps you

The ring ladder tells you where you lose chips. This table shows why, in one line.

Reading left to right follows the shot: if contact holds but landing drops, the strike is not the issue.

Drills behind this insight

Record any of these in the app and this insight updates when you save the session.

Every chipping drill records landing and contact. Only the three marked here record the finish as well.

Examples, and what the coach says

Example 1

Everything drops at the same step

90 chips, 30 at each of three steps.

Success by distance
DistanceAttemptsLandingFinishClean
5 yd3073 %60 %80 %
10 yd3063 %40 %77 %
15 yd3037 %20 %70 %

How to read it

  • Read each row left to right, in the order the shot happens: contact, landing, finish.
  • Clean contact barely changes, from 80 % to 70 %, so the strike holds up.
  • Landing falls by half at 15 yd. Finish follows, because a ball that lands in the wrong place rarely ends in the right one.
AI coachFocus: Landing from 15 yd

Your landing rate drops from 73 % at 5 yd to 37 % at 15 yd, while you still strike 70 % cleanly. You make good contact at that distance, you just do not yet know how far it flies.

Next session: Put your next session's reps at 15 yd and judge only the landing. Landing & Finish records both, so you can see the finish come back afterwards.

Example 2

Good landing, poor finish

68 chips across three steps. The longest step has only 8.

Success by distance
DistanceAttemptsLandingFinishClean
5 yd3070 %57 %83 %
10 yd3065 %25 %85 %
15 yd8———

How to read it

  • At 10 yd contact is 85 % and landing 65 %, both solid. Then finish falls to 25 %.
  • The fault is after the landing: the ball is releasing further than you expect.
  • A dash means fewer than 10 balls on that measure, not a score of zero.
AI coachFocus: Release at 10 yd

You land it on target 65 % of the time from 10 yd but finish close only 25 %. Your strike and landing are not the issue, so the problem is how far the ball runs after it lands.

Next session: Take one club less and land it further on, so the ball has less to do. Finish precision will show whether it worked.

All numbers here are illustrative sample data, and the coach notes show the kind of advice you get. In the app, the AI coach reads all your chipping data and gives you one focus with its reasoning, based on your own sessions. Each chart also has a one-line takeaway of its own.
