Chipping overview

How often do your chips finish where they should, and does the lie change that?

In the app: Chipping

What it measures

  • Your inside-the-ring rate: chips that finished inside the target, divided by all chips recorded, across every chipping drill.
  • Next to it you see your best session and your next milestone, the next round 10 points up. A session needs 10 chips to count as a best.
  • Performance by lie splits the same rate into fairway, low rough, high rough and training mat, using the question you answer when you save a session. A lie is only compared once it has 10 shots.

How it helps you

It gives you one honest chipping number to watch over a season.

Your best session shows what you can already do. The gap between that and your average is often the easiest improvement available.

The lie split stops you from blaming your technique when it is really the rough.

Drills behind this insight

Record any of these in the app and this insight updates when you save the session.

Every scoring option counts, because each one records whether the chip finished on target.

Examples, and what the coach says

Example 1

A bad lie drags the average down

80 chips over several sessions, with the lie answered each time.

Inside the ring
46 %
37 of 80 chips
Best session
65 %
Next milestone
50 %
Performance by lie
Fairway
60 % 24 of 40
Low rough
46 % 11 of 24
High rough
13 % 2 of 16

How to read it

  • The 46 % headline hides a wide range, from 60 % on the fairway to 13 % in high rough.
  • The best session of 65 % is 19 points above the average, so the skill is there.
  • High rough has 16 shots, enough to compare. It is not a one-off.
AI coachFocus: Chips from high rough

From the fairway you are at 60 %, against 13 % from high rough. Your fairway chipping is already close to your best session, so most of the gap to 50 % sits in the thick stuff.

Next session: Put more reps on shots from high rough. The Flop Shot Matrix plays several lies, so pick it next and answer the lie question when you save.

Example 2

The lie is not the problem

76 chips. Most came from the fairway and low rough, with a few from a mat.

Inside the ring
53 %

Next milestone
60 %
Performance by lie
Fairway
54 % 27 of 50
Low rough
50 % 10 of 20
Training mat
6 of 10 shots recorded, not enough to show yet

How to read it

  • Fairway and low rough differ by 4 points, which is too small to mean anything.
  • Training mat has only 6 shots, so it shows progress instead of a bar.
  • When the split is flat, look for your answer in another card, such as Ring ladder or Strike quality.
AI coachFocus: Look beyond the lie

Between low rough and fairway your success rate barely moves, 50 % against 54 %. No lie is costing you, so changing where you practise would not help.

Next session: Stay on your current lies and push the distance instead. Your Ring ladder will show which distance is holding you under 60 %.

All numbers here are illustrative sample data, and the coach notes show the kind of advice you get. In the app, the AI coach reads all your chipping data and gives you one focus with its reasoning, based on your own sessions. Each chart also has a one-line takeaway of its own.
