Distance ladder

Which distances can you trust, and do you tend to come up short or long?

In the app: Control by distance

What it measures

  • Within-tolerance rate per distance band: four wedge bands from 30 to 100 yd, then five approach bands up to 200+ yd. A band needs 10 shots.
  • Each band also shows a lean: short, long or even. It needs at least 8 misses that were short or long.
  • Misses to the left or right are not part of the lean. Depth and direction are different problems.

How it helps you

Most amateurs miss short, because they plan for a perfect strike. A lean tells you to take more club before you change your swing.

It tells you which yardages to trust when you pick your target on the course.

Examples, and what the coach says

Example 1

Short, and it gets worse with distance

90 shots, 30 at each of three bands.

Within tolerance, by distance
50–69 yd
60 % 18 of 30Even
70–84 yd
43 % 13 of 30Leans short
85–100 yd
20 % 6 of 30Leans short

How to read it

  • The bars show how often you are inside the zone at each distance.
  • The tag shows which way you miss. Two of the three bands lean short.
  • At 85–100 yd, 18 of 24 misses were short. That many misses is a real pattern.
AI coachFocus: Carry at 85–100 yd

You are within tolerance 60 % from 50–69 yd but only 20 % from 85–100 yd, and most of those misses are short. You are likely planning for your best strike, not your average one.

Next session: Take one more club at that distance and swing the same. Spend your next Three Targets session on Never Short, mostly at the far target.

Example 2

Flying the short wedges

60 wedge shots, 30 at each of two bands.

Within tolerance, by distance
30–49 yd
33 % 10 of 30Leans long
50–69 yd
67 % 20 of 30Even

How to read it

  • This time the shorter band is the weaker one, which is less common.
  • A long lean at a short distance often comes from a full-swing habit.
  • It tells you the swing needs a shorter length, not more practice at the longer shot.
AI coachFocus: Partial wedges

You are within tolerance 67 % from 50–69 yd but only 33 % from 30–49 yd, and the misses there go long. Your full wedge is reliable. Your shorter swing has no fixed length yet.

Next session: Build a shorter stock swing. Wedges Distance Control makes you hit a set of shorter targets and records every short and long miss.
