Contact quality

Do you hit the ball first, and which way does your divot point?

What it measures

  • Share of strokes that hit the ball first, against strokes that touched the towel placed behind the ball.
  • The Divot Direction option also records whether the divot points straight, left or right. A trend line shows ball-first rate across recent sessions.
  • It needs 10 recorded contacts. Only the Divot Board drill feeds this card.

How it helps you

Hitting the ground first costs you distance and spin, and it also makes every other approach number worse.

You do not need a launch monitor. A towel and a mat tell you where the low point of your swing is.

Drills behind this insight

Record any of these in the app and this insight updates when you save the session.

No other approach drill records contact, so Three Targets or Iron Dispersion never change this card.

Examples, and what the coach says

Example 1

Too many towel contacts

50 recorded contacts on the Binary Clean option.

Contact mix
Ball firstTowel touched
Ball first
38 (76 %)
Towel touched
12 (24 %)

How to read it

  • About three in four strokes hit the ball first.
  • The other 24 % touched the towel, meaning that the club reached the ground too early.
  • Anything from 10 % upward is common enough to work on.
AI coachFocus: Low point forward

24 % of your 50 recorded contacts touched the towel. Each of those is a shot that loses distance before it even leaves the club, so this will also limit your distance control numbers.

Next session: Keep pressure on your lead side through impact, and run another Divot Board session on Binary Clean. Aim to bring towel touches under 10 %.

Example 2

Clean contact, divot pointing right

60 recorded contacts over several sessions, mostly on the Divot Direction option.

18 (33 %)
Ball-first contact by session
70 %95 %

How to read it

  • Ball-first contact is now 95 %, up from 70 %. You have solved that part.
  • Divot direction follows your swing path, and 18 of 54 point to the right.
  • Straight is the target, but a lean in one direction is only worth working on once contact is solid.
AI coachFocus: Next layer: swing direction

You strike the ball first on 95 % of 60 recorded contacts, 25 points up on your first tracked session. Keep the same setup, because it is clearly working. Your divots now show the next thing to look at: they lean right a third of the time.

Next session: Stay on Divot Direction, and set an alignment stick along your target line. Then check on Iron Dispersion if the ball flight matches.

All numbers here are illustrative sample data, and the coach notes show the kind of advice you get. In the app, the AI coach reads all your approach data and gives you one focus with its reasoning, based on your own sessions. Each chart also has a one-line takeaway of its own.
